Description

This Speeches of Hayne and Webster is a full printing of Webster’s great 1830 U.S. Senate speech declaring the Union “paramount and indissoluble” and Robert Hayne’s original speech and later reply.

Wright Howes calls Webster’s speech “the most famous American oration of the 19th Century;” and, as it is, it is considered the most eloquent speech ever delivered in Congress. Webster’s description of the U.S. government as “made for the people, made by the people, and answerable to the people,” was later paraphrased by Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address in the words “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

According to historian Robert Remini “this noble utterance was Webster’s supreme gift to the American people. With poetry and language, majesty and sentiment, and sublimity of thought, he embodied in this address many of the beliefs and feelings of the American people, who, for the past two decades, had experienced a surge of nationalism they had never known before.”

Bound in 3/4  leather with raised spines and gilt and crimson spine label; marbled boards. Text lightly foxed with printed blocks somewhat darkened; else very good.
