Stanton responds to a letter to him (present) from a Robert Bonner (1824-1899), a newspaper publisher (N. Y. Ledger), harness racing owner, and philanthropist – also a friend of Gen. George McClellan and his executor!
Bonner writes of a letter Stanton had written to the Rev. Dr. Prime, but which had also been marked “Confidential.” Though Bonner would like to publish it, as it would “do you a great deal of good; more even than Mr. Greeley’s article.” But Stanton strongly demurs, thanking Bonner for his “kind feelings”, yet goes on, “But seeking only to discharge with fidelity a solemn public duty, is my duty as well as my desire to avoid every personal consideration. That good men approve my conduct…strengthens me, but this is a private feeling that shuns notoriety.”
Excellent, written with a beautiful and strong hand.
