Edwin Stanton signs the Appointment of Maine abolitionist Adelbert Ames to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th Regiment, U.S. Infantry. The regiment was one of the first four Buffalo Soldier regiments established after Civil War’s end.
Ames fought with distinction during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Brevet Major General and earning the Congressional Medal of Honor for continuing his command after being severely wounded at First Bull Run. He was soon appointed Reconstructionist Governor of Georgia, a post he had to flee under threats of death. He was the penultimate general officer to die, at the age of 97 in 1933. Excellent Association!
