Description
Omar Bradley’s A Soldier’s Story is the behind-the-scenes eyewitness account of the war that shaped the world, the tremendous manpower at work, the unprecedented stakes, the snafus that almost led to defeat, the larger-than-life personalities and brilliant generals (Eisenhower, Patton, Montgomery) who masterminded it all. There is not a better memoir of a high-ranking soldier of the Second World War.
This copy is inscribed and signed to Major General Charles Trueman Lanham. Lanham (1902-1978), known as “Buck”, was an author, poet, and professional soldier in the United States Army. He earned 14 decorations in his career including the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal. After retiring from the military Buck Lanham was active in business. Lanham is the model for the character “Colonel Cantwell” in Ernest Hemingway’s novel Across the River and Into the Trees, and in life was a close friend of the Hemingway.
Inscription reads “For Buck Lanham / With gratitude for the / outstanding service / you rendered me / (signed)” Light foxing; light damp stain; chips and small tears to the dust jacket. Very good with strong ink inscription and signature.
