Description

George Brinton McClellan wrote Manual of Bayonet Exercise for the Army in 1852 after studying military tactics and training in Europe. This edition, hurriedly issued at the beginning of the Civil War, was among many titles J. B. Lippincott printed to help train the rapidly expanding Union Army.

This copy belonged to Captain William Penney, commander of Company E, 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Penny and his company enlisted from Worthington, Ohio in 1861 and fought at the Battle of Shiloh among many other engagements. He apparently purchased this book after the 1864 re-enlistment of the regiment, entitling them to the designation “Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry.”

Penny signs on the fly leaf “Capt. Wm. Penney / Co. E 46 O.V.V.I.”

Lightly foxed; lightly rubbed; bumped; light wear of extremities; else very good.
