Description

Rank and File, edited by James I. “Bud” Robertson, Jr., and Richard M. McMurray is a fine collection of essays serving as a festschrift to the great Civil War scholar, Bell Irvin Wiley.

Contributions include Robertson on Confederate Chaplain Wiliam E. Wiatt, McMurray on John Bell Hood, and Maury Klein on Northern industrialists. For all the fine essays, the most valuable contributions are Henry Malone’s biographical essay on Wiley and John Porter Bloom’s comprehensive bibliography of Wiley’s writings. All of Wiley’s books are included, along with his numerous introductions and forewords. The only writings not included individually are over 300 scholarly book reviews.

Bell Wiley was certainly one of the greatest Civil War historians, and this festschrift, signed by the late Bud Robertson, is an important item in a collection of Civil War books.

Very good; dust jacket.
