Description
Offering a carte-de-visite of Abolitionist, Suffragist, reformer, journalist, editor, and temperance advocate Mary Livermore, signed along with an Autograph Quotation signed in full.
The carte is a bust portrait of Mrs. Livermore, signed in black ink “Mary A. Livermore.” The carte bears a backmark from Busby and Hart in Lynn, Massachusetts. The back also contains some pencil notations in another hand. Livermore was born in Massachusetts and moved to Chicago in 1857. She was well acquainted with Myra Bradwell. Bradwell was instrumental in gaining Mary Lincoln’s release from Bellevue Place. Livermore was also a founding member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, headquartered in Evanston, IL. Evanston is the first community north of Chicago, and was dry until 1972. Livermore moved back to Massachusetts in 1870. Lynn Massachusetts is about 20 miles from her home then.
Also included is a Autograph quotation, signed in full on an off-white 5″ x 4″ sheet. In full:
“Be a lamp in a chamber if you cannot be a star in the sky.” The quote is inscribed to Mrs. Nettie M. West and dated April 5, 1899; Livermore signs below.
