Jane Addams was a reformer and activist for social improvement in America. Her Hull House settlement house in Chicago brought innovative social, educational, and artistic programs to the Eastern European immigrants in the area.  By 1920, the settlement house movement had grown to almost 500 settlements throughout the nation. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931.
