Memorializing Philip Sheridan

Description

This grouping includes a small, green cloth bound book and a In Memoriam folded sheet.

The book (with white silk moire flyleaf and end page), titled Philip Henry Sheridan includes proclamations honoring the life and successes of General Philip Sheridan, from several states. The pamphlet is of similar nature, and rom the Military Order of the Loyal Union of the United States- Commandery of the State of Pennsylvania. The text is the same as the entry in the book for Pennsylvania. It appears to be a stand alone piece, perhaps distributed at Sheridan’s funeral, in 1888.

The endpaper bears the name and rank of John M. McGrath. McGrath was a Major and a Surgeon, and a Member of the 78th Reg. Pennsylvania Volunteers. He would enlist three times over his military career.

In addition to his brilliant military career, Philip Sheridan was especially admired for maintaining law and order during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. As commander of the army headquarters in Chicago at that time, Sheridan proactively bombed buildings to prevent flames from spreading along the South Side. To commemorate his contributions to the city, Chicagoans formed the Philip Sheridan Monument Association. The group commissioned the sculptor Gutzon Borglum (who would go on the create Mt. Rushmore) to create a monument for Sheridan, thanks to his earlier Sheridan Monument in Washington D.C., and the John Peter Altgeld Monument in Chicago. Chicago’s Sheridan road (which runs north out of Chicago, past the former location of Fort Sheridan, and on to the south side of Racine, WI) is also named after him. One of the
