Description

Eulogy on the Life of George Washington was published in January 1800, shortly after Washington’s death, by Robert Treat Paine, Jr. The eulogy is based on a speech delivered in Newburyport, Massachusetts on January 2nd.

Robert Treat Paine, Jr. (1773-1811), poet; editor; second son of Robert Treat Paine, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, was christened “Thomas Paine” but changed his name in 1801, after this pamphlet was published. Paine did this partly to honor his recently deceased older brother, and partly to dissociate himself from the Revolutionary pamphleteer, who was unpopular at the time.

Unbound, last page loose with corner chipped off, but present. Slightly clipped at top.

This is a rare & inscribed copy, signed with Paine’s birth name, “Revd. Mr. Milton, from his hble serv’t. Thos. Paine”.

Paine. Robert Treat. Eulogy on the Life of George Washington. Newburyport: Edmund Blunt, 1800. 1st edition, 22p., octavo, (Sabin 58199).
