Description

Zachary Taylor signed and order for extra whiskey rations.

The body of the document is written by the fort’s quartermaster, J. B. W. Stockton, “Return for extra Whiskey for Men on extra and daily Duty.” Taylor boldly signs off, “Z. Taylor / Col. / Comdg.”

Taylor was commanding Ft. Crawford as Colonel since the Black Hawk War of 1832. His success in the Second Seminole War attracted national attention and earned him the nickname “Old Rough and Ready”. His successes in the Mexican War propelled him into becoming the 12th U.S. President — dying 14 months into it, the third shortest time in the presidency.

A bold signature on a readable document. Nicely framed with a period engraving.
