When President Grant penned his memoirs in early 1885 – racing against his impending death to finish the project – he did so with his trusted and controversial aide, Adam Badeau, at his side. Grant’s books concluded with the Civil War because of his death in July.
So, Badeau picked up the topic himself and published a finishing “life memoir” in 1888. Whether Grant so intended it or not, the three volumes tell one story.
The design of Grant in Peace by Hubbard Brothers of Philadelphia closely copied Charles Webster Company’s “shoulder strap” design for the The Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, including matching green cloth and an exact copy of the Congressional Gold Medal placed in gold leaf on the front boards.
Rumor has it there was a great deal of legal saber-rattling between the two publishers over the physical appearance of Badeau’s book.
This set includes all three books in their collectible publisher’s presentation bindings, and again the Hubbard Brothers book looks almost identical to the Charles Webster presentation binding BY DESIGN!
We think these unique and desirable books deserve to be presented together as a three-volume set. All in excellent condition.
Grant has previous owner’s bookplates; lt. rub. bds. & lt. shelf wear; Badeau is lt. sun. & lt. ch. extrems.
