Description

James Madison signs a ship’s passport. These documents granted passage for ship’s sailing to various ports in the Mediterranean.

This one is for the Schooner Mary, originating from Boston. The ship contained 76 tons of cargo, bore no guns and a crew of only five men. She was captained by Obediah Dean. This vellum document is dated 15 December 1808 and was issued in Maryland in the Baltimore Territory. It is signed by Secretary of State D. Smith.

With the usual scalloped-edged top, uneven margins, evenly toned, usual creases; in excellent condition. Framed.
