Description
These Abraham Lincoln Bookends, by the Pompeian Bronze Company, date from 1925.
Named The Emancipator, the front features a beautifully rendered relief of Abraham Lincoln as he pens a document (The Emancipation Proclamation perhaps?) while Nike places a laurel crown on Lincoln’s head. Both Nike and the laurel leaf have long been a symbol of victory and high esteem. The origin of the Lincoln and Nike image is from a Jules Edouard Roine plaque issued by the American Numismatic Society in 1909, the year of the centennial of Lincoln’s birth.
The back features the title The Emancipator with an olive branch below. Further down, the words read Copyright 1925 / Pompeian Bronze Company.
These are beautifully rendered and gracefully reflect the era that spans Art Nouveau to Art Deco.
Some minor wear to enamel, usual age/shelf wear; they will need new felt on the bottoms.
(Abraham Lincoln) Set of Two Pompeian Bronze Bookends; circa 1925; 5 1/2″ x 4″ x 2 1/2″ (sight).
