Bill of Debt or Promissory Note in the hand of Ebenezer Moses. Ethan Allen’s signature appears twice as well as being mentioned in the body of the document, “Know all men that Ethan Allen Esq. does owe and indebted unto Stephen Fay….”
Allen was a constant irritant to the British during the Revolution, before being captured. He became a land speculator and the present document was certainly on account of these activities.
Strong ink writing and signatures; minor staining, usual folds. “History Dept. of Stanford” (“Discarded”stamp on verso).
(Allen, Ethan) Two Endorsement Signatures; on Bill of Debt. Bennington [VT]; 16 July 1776. 4-3/4″ x 12-1/4″.
