Description

When Francis T. Miller published the massive, ten volume The Photographic History of the Civil War for The Review of Reviews Company, it was an accomplishment of magnificent scope. It is still considered a classic photographic survey of the war. First published in 1911 (the 50th anniversary of the war) in ten volumes. It boasts “Thousands of Scenes Photographed 1861-65, with Text by many Special Authorities.”

“The grandfather of pictorial histories, this mammoth work is a necessary part of any Civil War library.” – David Eicher.

A list of the volumes and conditions:

Volume 1. The Opening Battles. Shaken hinge; light mottling at extremities; minimal wear. Volume 2. Two Years of Grim War. Tight; minimal wear. Volume 3. The Decisive Battles. Strong hinges; minimal wear Volume 4. The Cavalry. Strong hinges; minimal wear. Volume 5. Forts and Artillery. Hinges strong; minimal wear Volume 6. The Navies. Strong hinges; minimal wear. Volume 7. Prisons and Hospitals. Hinges starting; minimal wear. Volume 8. Soldier Life and Secret Service. Hinges strong; light wear at edges. Volume 9. Poetry and Eloquence. Hinges tight; very light mottling at extremities. Volume 10. Armies and Leaders. Hinges shaken; minimal wear.

The publishers described the trade editions as “Silk Cloth Binding,” and this set is uncommonly “silky” and luxurious in appearance. A brilliant prize for a Civil War bookshelf!

Overall condition very good. Spines show very slight hint of sunning; otherwise this is an uncommonly bright and handsome set.
