The photo depicts the headquarters of General George H. Thomas of the Army of the Cumberland during the Chattanooga Campaign of 1863. The Greek Revival home was located along the stretch of road referred to as “Generals’ Row” and is often identified as the Richardson House at 320 Walnut Street. The house hosted a number of generals including, briefly, General U. S. Grant. The photo is reproduced in Volume 2 of Miller’s Photographic History of the Civil War.
No other copies have been found featuring the detailed engraving around the edges by Lieutenant G. A. Bauer. The engraving features shield and star devices at the corner and a device at the top labeled “Head Quarters Army of the Cumberland.”
Toned with toning slightly darker around edges of the paper; light mildew stains on board; very lightly frayed at edges of board; chipped cardboard and mildew stain on verso; else very good condition and handsome! “
