Description

The Nineteenth Illinois… is Henry Haynie’s memoir of service in a prominent Chicago regiment. The book opens with the poem Who’ll Save the Left based on their fighting at Stones River. The title is displayed in gilt lettering on the cover along with an acorn signifying the Union XIV Corps.

The regiment was organized in the first month of the war and included several former members of Elmer Ellsworth’s United States Zouave Cadets, the famous drill team that launched a fascination with light infantry drill across the country in 1860. The Nineteenth Illinois served in the Army of the Cumberland and saw distinguished service at battle such as Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and the Atlanta Campaign.

This copy is presented and signed by Lieutenant John Young of Company E, a member of the committee that produced the book. It is presented to Captain Roswell H. Mason, a veteran of the 72nd Illinois Infantry and the son of Roswell B. Mason, Mayor of Chicago from 1869-1871.

Shaken; light shelf wear; spine lightly darkened; owner’s bookplate pasted in; else very good.
