Description
This Mary Lincoln carte is commonly called the notorious “spirit” photo. It shows Mary Lincoln at half-length, seated, in her widow’s dress; a ghostly image of her husband stands behind, with one hand on each of her shoulders.
Wm. H. Mumler specialized in such pictures and, although once exposed by Harper’s Weekly, continued to find gullible clients such as Mrs. Lincoln. Taken circa 1872, this was the last known photo ever taken of Mrs. Lincoln. A scarce artifact!
Mount w/ tiny spotting, trimmed somewhat irregularly. ML, O-26.
