Description

Matthew Gallman and Gary Gallagher edited and contributed to Lens of War: Exploring Iconic Photographs of the Civil War to give historians a chance to deeply examine significant images of the conflict.

Leading scholars were invited to select and reflect upon a single photograph. Each could choose an image and interpret it in personal and scholarly terms. The result is a remarkable set of essays by twenty-seven scholars whose numerous volumes on the Civil War have explored military, cultural, political, African American, women’s and environmental history.

This copy features signed bookplates pasted in from the following contributors. Gary Gallagher, Harold Holzer, Joan Waugh, Joseph Glatthaar, Caroline Janney, James Marten, Earl Hess, Elizabeth Varon, and Megan Kate Nelson.
