Salmon P. Chase, Psalms Suited to Christian Worship, Signed

$5,500.00

Gifted to His Niece

Description

Salmon P. Chase signed and inscribed this copy of Psalms Suited to Christian Worship to his neice, jane. This is the first time we’ve handled a signed book from Salmon P. Chase’s library.

Chase signs on the front flyleaf and again on the title page; inscribed “J. Chase Auld / From her Uncle” and signed.

Jane Auld was a niece, daughter of his brother Alexander. Widowed early, she spent most of her life struggling on the edge of poverty. In his will, Chase left her an annuity for life — and this cherished Bible, which certainly shows great use by Chase.

Chase seemingly would sign his home books twice, once on the title page and again on the front flyleaf — his signed gift inscription just below. It’s interesting to see how Chase’s signature changed over time.

Worn; functionally re-spined, but poorly; still tight; bold ink signatures.

(Salmon P. Chase). Signed book. PSALMS SUITED TO CHRISTIAN WORSHIP. NY: White, Gallaher and White; 1831.
