Theodore Roosevelt declines an invitation to “take part in a shooting contest” at a shooting federation.

TR goes on to speak highly of training Americans to shoot, “as in any crisis we must depend upon our volunteer citizen soldiery for our army.” Shooting prowess and training is “the most essential of the qualities of physical address which are necessary in a soldier.”
