Description

Addressed to Mr. Joseph Rapin who worked as Jefferson’s steward at the President’s House (now the White House) for the first six months of his presidency, resigning in September 1801. Rapin’s address was located on the same block as Benjamin Franklin’s house and printing shop, which at this time was occupied by Franklin’s granddaughter and her husband and was a short walk from Independence Hall and the President’s House in Philadelphia.

Matted and framed with an engraved reproduction of Rembrandt Peale’s portrait of Jefferson to the overall size of 10.5″ x 15.5″. Lightly creased and wrinkled. Slight toning with minor scattered soiling. Faint postmark stamp at center left.

Address panel penned entirely in Jefferson’s hand to “Mr. Joseph Rapin / South side of Market Street / between 3d. & 4th. Streets / Philadelphia.”
