Description

Under the Maltese Cross: Antietam to Appomattox is a magnificently realized history of Pittsburgh’s 155th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a celebrated regiment of the V Corps, told entirely through first hand vignettes by officers and men. It contains, of course, many fine accounts of Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign.

Brilliantly illustrated, much in color, often with artwork by the veterans. Bright blue boards, gilt cover design, and heroic watercolor frontispiece.

“The perusal of Under the Maltese Cross has afforded me very great delight. In typographical elegance and in interesting contents and also for artistic engravings, it compares with any history of the Civil War yet falling under my notice. – Andrew Carnegie. Eminent Book-Lover, Author and Citizen of the World.” Quote from a sales prospectus that is not present with this copy.

Inscribed and signed on personalized foolscap letterhead pasted in to “Mrs. Laura Earle Gilles / Daughter of Sergt. James B. Earle / who served throughout all / of said campaigns in the / 61 Regt Penna Vols. / with honorable record / for gallantry in action / (signed) Charles F. W. McKenna / editor and compiler… / Christmas, 1916.”

Light wear; hinges shaken and beginning to crack; usual shelf wear. Very handsome!
