Description

Woodrow Wilson signs a typed letter to Hon. Brand Whitlock, U. S. Minister to Belgium. The letter is a thank you note for a proof of portrait medal of the Marquis of Villalabor and Whitlock. Whitlock was serving in Brussels. In 1919, Brussels was raised to the status to a rank that would permit an American Embassy. Whitlock was promoted to Ambassador at that point. Regrettably, we are unable to find an image of the medal.

Brand Whitlock had a long history in America and overseas. In his lifetime he was a writer, a politician,  an attorney, and four-time mayor of Toledo, Ohio (running on an Independent ticket), minister and ambassador to Belgium, and author of numerous articles and books, both novels and non-fiction.

He also has Illinois connections. While working for The Chicago Herald, he attracted to attention of Governor Altgeld, who wanted him to be his secretary. Whitlock instead went to work for the Secretary of State. In his spare time he earned his law degree. He is the person who prepared the pardons for the men convicted in the Haymarket Affair. He was also a member of The White Chapel Club, a group of Chicago journalists. While President Jack the Ripper never showed, the inside of the club had a macabre theme; including human skulls for drinking wine, red was preferred of course.

Excellent condition, with only minor feathering to Wilson’s signature. Framed.

Wilson, Woodrow. Typed Letter, signed. Washington, 20 Sept. 1918 on White House stationery. 9″ x 7″, framed to 12 1/2″ x 10 1/2″.
