John Trumbull, Declaration of Independence, Print of Ormsby Engraving

Description

John Trumbull painted the original patriotic scene on a 12’ x 18’ canvas in 1818, a year after he was commissioned to create it. Trumbull painted many of the figures in the picture from life, and visited Independence Hall to depict the chamber where the Second Continental Congress met.

Asher Durand produced the original engraving. Many others followed, but none as accomplished as this one by Waterman L. Ormsby circa 1830.

Ormsby etched an attractive key below the image, showing the names of all the participants. The heads of the participants are included, he wanted to accurately depict each of them.

Excellent condition with wonderful tonality. Handsomely framed!
