Abraham Lincoln, Official Printing of 1st Inaugural Speech
Lincoln’s First Speech as President
Description
When Abraham Lincoln began his presidency seven states has seceded from the Union.
His First Inaugural Address was written in a spirit of reconciliation toward these seceded states. Touching in several topics: he pledges to “hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the government”; and states that the Union would not interfere with slavery where it existed; and finally promises that while he would never be the first to attack, any use of arms against the United States would be regarded as rebellion and met with force.
In closing, Lincoln stated “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
Excellent, housed in 1/2 leather protective folder and a slipcase.
