Description
Bronze Wood by Carl Sandburg is a small, limited issue tribute to a unique work of art.
The work was a bronze wood sculpture of a face by artist Leon Gelber, and it hung on the door of a room where Sandburg lived while staying in San Francisco. In his brief essay Sandburg contemplates the bronze wood face and the photograph of it made by Flannery. “The face seemed to say that it had forgotten things that ought to be forgotten and it is a gift worth having to so forget.” “The face seems very ancient in time, as though born in a continent where mankind had origin and began wandering. Yet the face is alive now and will be alive across all coming generations…”
A remarkable tribute and a rumination on a single work of art.
Spine starting to crack; light damp stain throughout; lightly sunned and usual shelf wear; else very good. Signed by Carl Sandburg and Henry Flannery.
