Description

Charles Francis Adams wrote The Life of John Adams about his own prominent ancestor and became one of the most important presidential biographers of the 19th Century.

As the grandson of the subject, C. F. Adams was in a unique position to write this biography, including family insights. As ambassador to Great Britain, he was instrumental in keeping them neutral during the Civil War and enhancing his country’s reputation abroad. As America’s chief arbiter on the commission to settle the “Alabama Claims,” he strengthened the concept of world law through arbitration.

Inscribed and signed “Dennis R. Alward / with regards of / Charles Francis Adams / 30 April, 1868.” C. F. Adams’ own bookplate pasted on to front end sheet. A rare book and a scarce artifact!

Very good; tight and clean; some minor cracking of the dry spine leather, which looks to have been re-spined.

Adams, Charles Francis, THE LIFE OF JOHN ADAMS, SECOND PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: WITH NOTES AND ILLUSTRATIONS. Boston: Little, Brown, 1856. 1st edition, 684p., 3/4 Morocco and marbles boards, end sheets; leather spine labels.
