Description
Symposium Lincolniana provides a beautiful illustration of posters and prints in Denby type.
What is remarkable now about this publication is that we can see in it not just an attractive example of type setting through the photoengraving process known as linecut, we see an attempt to use the artform to make strong statements about Lincoln and freedom during the crisis of 1942 and the entry of the United States into World War II. The author shows off the type by reproducing great Lincoln speeches as well as other great texts expressing sentiments in support of freedom and democratic government.
A number of cartoons by artist Arthur Szyk are also reproduced that lampoon Adolph Hitler and his ambitions which were then just starting to fail.
Denby writes “In this particular instance, the National Emergency affords the opportunity to display important documents which may be of an inspiring character, in such a way that they command attention and can be read from a distance, giving them the prominence that they deserve.”
A wonderful book largely about Lincoln, but with the purpose of contributing to the 1942 war effort.
Presentation inscription from author.
