Canby’s Funeral Came Close to Rivalling Lincoln’s
Offering an Edward Richard Sprigg Canby, Autograph Signature.
General Canby writes his name “Ed. R. S. Canby” clipped from the bottom of a letter. The letter had been written to Rear Admiral D. G. Farragut off Mobile, with the clerk adding Canby’s rank of Major General.
An later ink note at the bottom states, “General Canby was killed by the Modoc Indians 1874”.
Large, bold signature.
