Description
History of the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers Corn Exchange Regiment is a massive chronicle of one of the most celebrated infantry regiments to come from Philadelphia.
The Corn Exchange Regiment was raised in the summer of 1862 under the call for “300,000 more” men to suppress the rebellion. As a part of the Army of the Potomac’s V Corps the regiment hardly missed a major battle from the time of their muster. They suffered accordingly. This hefty volume by the regimental Survivors’ Association documents service in battles from Antietam, Shepherdstown, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg and Appomattox.
A famous regiment, the book includes an introduction written by General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, its brigade or division commander for much of its service. Of the regiment Chamberlain said that in their “devotion gave proof that there are things nobler than pleasure and greater than self, which men and women count worthy of bravest endeavor and supreme sacrifice.”
This is the third version of this book, previous editions having been released in 1888 and 1892.
