Jimmy Carter signs and inscribes a black and white photograph of Carter with Illinois Congressional Representative Dan Rostenkowski.
In full: “With best wishes / to Dan Rostenkowski / Jimmy Carter” The back of the photo bears a stamp that reads “OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH / THE WHITE HOUSE/ Washington/22 MA77 754-13.
Rostenkowski began his career in Chicago politics starting in 1952. Rising through the ranks of state government, he would serve as a Congressman for Illinois for 36 years, from 1959 to 1995. Rostenkowski’s political career ended in 1994 after a two-year investigation by the Justice Department. He was indicted on corruption charges for his role in the House Post Office scandal and was forced to step down from all Congressional leadership roles. Pleading guilty to reduced charges of mail fraud, he was given a 17 month sentence. President Bill Clinton pardoned him in 200o.
