Harlan’s eldest daughter married Robert Lincoln and his son, William, was a close friend of Tad. A member of the Alabama Claims commission and closely involved with Indian affairs, he was also known for having fired Walt Whitman, then a clerk at Interior, after finding Leaves of Grass to be morally offensive; Harlan said he’d resign if Whitman was reinstated.
