James H. Campbell’s McClellan was called a “Lawyer’s Brief” on behalf of the career of General George B. McClellan by its author. It was also the first voluminous analysis of the General’s career.

James Campbell was a great admirer of George B. McClellan and spends almost all of his attention on his subject’s Civil War service. He was among the most influential voices in condemning Stanton and in arguing that had Lincoln left McClellan in charge of the Army of the Potomac “Little Mac” would have saved the Union.
