Description

General James W. Singleton: Lincoln’s Copperhead Ally by Peter L. Barry provides the first glimpse of a stern critic of President Lincoln who was also a good friend.

Abraham Lincoln and James Singleton were colleagues and political friends during the 1830’s and 1840’s. They were both Whigs and supporters of Henry Clay. However, they grew distant when the Whig party came apart. Lincoln became a Republican and Singleton a Douglas Democrat.

During the Civil War Singleton became stridently anti-war and anti-administration. He even joined the Sons of Liberty – the Copperheads. Following Lincoln’s re-election, however, Singleton softened his stances, and even made trips to Richmond, using his anti-administration credentials to sound out Confederate leaders on potential peace terms.

An unknown but important character from the history of the Civil War!

“This is a fascinating volume and deserves a prominent place in the history of national politics, Illinois and Lincolniana.”
– Dr. Wayne C. Temple.
