Richard Dana, Jr. wrote Two Years Before the Mast after a enlisting  as a common sailor for a two-year voyage around Cape Horn.

Dana kept a diary of his journey. Two Years Before the Mast is based on this diary. “This account of California in 1835 and 1836 surpassed in popularity all other books relating to the state.”

Dana would go on the be a staunch abolitionist; and a founder of the Free Soil Party. This Author’s Edition contains additional material from Dana’s visit years later.
