This patriotic print, The Defenders of Our Union, is from Kimmel and Forster, one of the most prolific firms of the Civil War period.

Union heroes are illustrated in five ovals representing historical, political and military figures. The inclusion of Tennessee governor and Vice President elect Andrew Johnson suggests that it was intended as a presidential campaign print. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Johnson represent American political leaders. Admirals Porter, Farragut, and Dahlgren represent the Navy. Generals Sherman, Grant, and Sheridan represent the Army.

Lightly toned; touches of white gouache added by hand.
