Lantern slides have been in use since around 1850. These slides would be placed in a holder with a light source behind, and the image would be projected on a wall or a screen. They were a popular form of entertainment, and also provided for educational opportunities. They usually came in theme packs, with popular subjects being travel and education.

This lantern slide features Abraham Lincoln visiting a soldier in the hospital. Lincoln is surrounded by hospital personnel. It probably was part of a Civil War set.
