Description

This woodcut print portrait of Abraham Lincoln seems is based on O-77, The Gettysburg Lincoln. It is one of the most popular images of Lincoln.

Forest C. LaPlante (1915-2001) is a contemporary of Charles Turzak. LaPlante was mostly known for his paintings. At 19, he was part of a group of artists charged with creating the backdrops at the Toledo Zoo. This was a WPA project. Turzak did his share of WPA work, too.  LaPlante was a naval signalman during WWII. He earned a a silver star for his service in the Pacific. LaPlante was a member of the Toledo Artists Club and Northwest Ohio Watercolor Society. For his day job, he worked in the art department of The Blade–Toledo’s oldest continually running business. His tenure lasted 37 years. The newspaper has deep Lincoln roots. David Ross Locke brought national fame to the newspaper during the Civil War. He wrote satires on slavery, the war, and temperance, using the name Petroleum V. Nasby. Lincoln enjoyed the satires, and would occasionally quote from them.

In a classic MCM wood frame. The back of the piece includes LaPlante’s business card.
