Blendon Reed Campbell’s Abraham Lincoln statuette is reminiscent of the rugged quality of his contemporary, Joe Davidson.
Campbell was a skilled illustrator and printmaker. He did many covers for Scribner’s and McClure’s magazines, and many books during the 1900s. Over his career Campbell would split his time between the east coast and the west coast. He received several commissions through the FAP creating lithographs depicting scenes of American life during the era. His work hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of Modern Art.
It seems that he also had a passion for Mr. Lincoln; for besides this statuette, he produced illustrations for books and at least one oil of the 16th president. We handled this very bronze back in 1980 but have not seen another until the return of this one. Seemingly his work with bronze is unknown, which is a shame; for this version of a rugged Lincoln is quite magnificent– even with the beard anomaly. $5,500.00
