Charles Swett’s A Trip to British Honduras, and to San Pedro, Republic of Honduras chronicles a southern planter’s explorations of new territories following the overthrow of the Confederacy and the slave economy. Following the war in 1867 Swett left his farm near Vicksburg, Mississippi to investigate the climate and culture of Latin America, doing so alongside many ex-confederates. His observations, written in a diary form, are detailed and quite informative.
