Historian and editor, Douglas Southall Freeman was one of our nation’s leading authorities on the history of the Confederacy.  This Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Lee was the result of nineteen years of devotion to the subject; the work is one of the most important and enduring works in American biography.  Historian Liddell Hart said of it, “As a work of military history, I have no hesitation in ranking it almost in a class by itself.”

A true prize for a display shelf of American History or biography.

Text shows light dampstaining with minor red stains from the original boards. Rebound with new marbled end pages, and autographed.

Freeman, Douglas S.  R. E. LEE: A BIOGRAPHY.  New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1934-1935. Later editions; 4 volumes, frontispieces, portraits, plates. Signed in the author’s small, inimitable hand; scarce thus!  This early edition of R. E. LEE is handsomely rebound in ¾-crimson Morocco with burgundy boards and gilt lettering.
