Description

Warren Frank Wheelock’s Lincoln and Horse on Circuit dates from 1939. A Spanish American War veteran, Wheelock was a self-taught artist. He is most known for his paintings, works in carved wood, and bronzes. This handsome bronze sculpture is an evocative example of Wheelock’s neo-deco art, known for his clean geometric lines.

Lincoln sits astride his horse, wearing his shawl and ever-present tall hat.  One imagines Lincoln on circuit, with time to think through law cases and politics; for it was on circuit that he cut his political tools. This bronze is clearly an example of early mid century modernism.

Wheelock was active in New York, New Mexico, and Massachusetts.
