This carte de visite of Abraham Lincoln, featuring two poses, O-91 and O-92, taken by Anthony Berger.
This card would have been produced for 1864 presidential campaign pins. Both poses were taken the same day and have inspired many subsequent paintings. O-92 became the $5 bill pose and was a Robert Lincoln favorite. It was also used by a number of engravers, including William Edgar Marshall, John Chester Buttre, and John H. Littlefield.
Mathew Brady tacked 12 cartes-de-visite to a wall, photographed them, then reduced the images to fit campaign pins for supporters to wear.
Uncut and unused templates are just plain rare. This is only the second one we have handled–the other one had an image removed!
