Important Biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

Alice Rains Trulock completed her comprehensive biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, In the Hands of Providence, shortly before she passed away in 1992. Sadly, she did not get to see the publication of her project of ten years.

This work offers and insightful and fresh account of Chamberlain and his times. Based largely on primary sources, it uses much new material, including letters, diaries, and photographs previously owned by Chamberlains family and fellow officers. Trulock explores in detail all of Chamberlain’s campaigns and takes a new look at the operations of 1864-1865.

Throughout, Trulock gives her subject a strong voice, allowing critical events and issues to be examined through his eyes for the first time in any published work.

Of course, there are no copies of In the Hands of Providence signed directly by Alice Trulock. She did sign a few bookplates for booksellers before her death. These are the only books that carry her signature, and they are just plain scarce.

Near fine condition; Signed bookplate pasted in.
