Description

Ida M. Tarbell’s The Life of Abraham Lincoln: Drawn From Original Sources… and Illustrated With Many Reproductions From Original Paintings, Photographs, etc., was the best-selling Lincoln biography of its day – recommended by Robert Todd Lincoln.

Though a popularizer of the Lincoln theme, which she never abandoned, Tarbell was also responsible for numerous documentary finds (including photographs and Lincoln’s first speech). She was the first major biographer not to have known Lincoln personally, the first to stress the benefits of his frontier heritage and was an inspiration for Carl Sandburg’s work.

Writers such as Benjamin Thomas and, more recently, Stacy Lynn have celebrated Tarbell as the first Lincoln biographer to treat the subject in a nuanced and contextualized fashion. An important piece of Lincolniana.

Both volumes lightly shaken; toned; lightly foxed; light chipping of extremities; else very good condition. Signed and dated on front fly leaf of Volume 1.
