Description

Charles Rowley Cushman, the Clerk of the Committee on Printing for the House of Representatives, was responsible for having the Government Printing Office release Memorial Addresses Delivered Before the Two Houses of Congress on the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley after the assassination of the three chief executives.

The memorial addresses were originally presented by George Bancroft on Lincoln, February 12, 1866, James G. Blaine on James A. Garfield, February 27, 1882, and John Hay on William McKinley, February 27, 1902.

The beautiful oversize presentation features large deckled-edge paper, fine engravings of each president and printings of relevant resolutions. An interesting relic of the grief experienced by Americans following three presidential assassinations in less than 40 years.

It is also an important item for a Lincoln book collection, listed in Jay Monaghan’s bibliography (#1402), and is obtainable at a modest cost for an original item of Lincolniana.

Gilt Boards; deckled-edge paper; recased; lightly scuffed & mottled boards; else very good.
