Description
With The Burden Bearer: An Epic of Lincoln Francis Howard Williams contributed an epic poem to the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth in 1909.
History wrought in verse, The Burden Bearer anticipates the great works of poetry and prose-poetry by Stephen Vincent Benet and Carl Sandburg.
Williams, an editor and literary critic from Philadelphia, published much verse in his life. He was friends with Walt Whitman, and hosted luminaries such as Louisa May Alcott, George Cable and George Riddle at his Germantown home.
Lightly toned; 1” tear in the parchment spine but without loss; else very good. Some pages uncut.
Williams, Francis Howard. The Burden Bearer: An Epic of Lincoln. Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs & Co., 1908. Limited edition, #46/300, 198p., vellum, deckled edges, top edge gilt, (Monaghan-1642).
