Description

This print, titled Emancipation Proclamation January 1 1863 was created from an original rendered in pen by Gilman R. Russell, Professor of Penmanship.

A full-standing Lincoln figure is the centerpiece, making this one of the most attractive of these E.P. prints. Lincoln’s head is based on a photograph by Anthony Berger at Brady’s Washington Gallery, 9 February 1864 [O-91]; while the body originated from an 1856 presidential campaign lithograph of John C. Fremont. The ornamental title at the top features Liberty unsheathing her sword in order to break the chains of slavery, while a Freedman next to her seemingly bends over to look down on the “Emancipator” and his words.

The printer, Duval & Sons, were especially known for their calligraphic prints. This is one of their most successful.

Lt. toning; very lt. fox; else excellent.
